So... how to handle the individual rounds....
1) SHORT MEMORY!!!!!!
If you struggle and cannot answer any of the questions in the round (there are 2) ... do NOT linger on it. Forget about and concentrate on the next 2 questions. The individual round will go by very fast and before you know it, it will be over... don't spend all of your time thinking about question #2 from 4 rounds ago... it's over!
2) Put in an answer!!!
The graders are told to mark blanks as wrong... make a reasonable guess as to the answer!! Even if you only browsed the question... make an educated guess...
Uneducated guess: "The probability of this occurring is..." your answer: -12
3) Go for 1 of the 2 questions per round
This contest is to determine, as described in "Men in Black", "the best of the best of the best.... with honors". A few of the questions are designed to have only a few right answers among all participants. FOCUS your time to be sure to get 1 of the two. Even in the hardest rounds (with generally question 8 and question 10, though sometimes 9)... the OTHER question is designed to be easier!!! Get that one. A score of 5 (1 point per each round) is EXTREMELY good at this competition!!!
4) Be a great teammate!
Be a great TEAMMATE... we are NOT in competition with each other. The worst thing that you can do after someone says that they screwed up a problem is to say "How could mess that one up", or "That one was so easy." We need to pick each other up in order to perform well. Tell the person... "don't worry about, the question was tricky... go get the next question!!"
